W. Thomas McNicholas, Jr., DVM

Dr. McNicholas began his veterinary career 16 years ago as a general practitioner in Moultrie, FL and Colorado. In 1998, he was awarded an internship in Texas followed by a three-year residency at Purdue University. From 2002 through 2004, Dr. McNicholas was a staff surgeon at Palm Beach Veterinary Specialists before becoming the managing owner of Affiliated Veterinary Specialists of Jacksonville. Dr. McNicholas enjoys all aspects of veterinary surgery including soft tissue, orthopedic, and neurosurgical procedures, and is particularly interested in arthroscopic procedures. Each year, Dr. McNicholas attends the Veterinary Advanced Arthrology Association (VA3) symposium in Naples, FL to stay on the cutting edge of arthroscopic surgery. Dr. McNicholas and his surgical team are committed to high-level veterinary surgical services.

Jay B. Erne, DVM
Staff Surgeon

Dr. Erne joined AVS of Jacksonville as a full-time surgeon in 2009, and is accepting referrals for soft tissue, orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures. During his surgical training, Dr. Erne published numerous review articles and case reports in peer-reviewed journals. His research focused on immune-mediated joint disease in dogs with cruciate ligament injuries. Dr. Erne is highly skilled in all areas of veterinary surgery with his primary interests in fracture management, total hip replacement and challenging soft tissue procedures. He is currently working on developing a total hip replacement program utilizing a new cementless total hip replacement system. Dr. Erne shares his life with his wife, Nicole, and their two daughters Megan and Kathleen.
